NT Grandparents Day

NT Grandparents Day Sunday 31 October

The first ever Grandparents Day for the Northern Territory is on the last Sunday of October.

Territorians everywhere will be encouraged to hold their own celebration of their grandparents, grand-friends, kin, and those who take on the role of a grandparent in their family or community.

The ntgrandparentsday.org.au website launching soon will include everything you need to create an event of your own including a free Community Resources Kit with event planning guide, ideas for venues, catering, activities, invitation and poster templates, social media tiles and more.

But first, we want to hear from you! Tell us how you want to celebrate Grandparents Day in the Territory?

NT Grandparents Day - Sunday 31 October  2021

Grandparents Day is held every year on the last Sunday in October across the world and in some Australian states.

Grandparents Day has been celebrated in NSW (2020), QLD (2020), WA (2019) and ACT (2012) by state government with initiatives including free downloadable community resources, Best Grandparents Awards, free passes to local attractions for grandparents and children.

COTA NT's three-year NT Grandparents Day project aims to recognise the diversity of grandparent relationships across age groups, cultural backgrounds, and geographical locations. Grandparents, grand-friends, kin, and those who take on the role of a grandparent in their family or community are celebrated for their contributions.

What does the project hope to achieve?

  • Celebration and recognition of the role grandparents and older Territorians play in our society and in caring for children of all ages.
  • Promoting Grandparents Day to stakeholders throughout the Territory to schools, childcare centres, aged care facilities, libraries, electoral offices and seniors’ groups.
  • Fostering of intergenerational learning and offers older people ongoing opportunities to participate in their local communities.
  • Provision of resources for the community with a focus on schools, libraries and electoral offices to help Territorians celebrate the role grandparents and older Territorians play with suggestions for easy, intergenerational activities including story time, crafting and morning tea.
  • Promotion and easy access to Territory government support for grandparents and older carers.

The project aims to:

  • Support of grandparent carers and older carers.
  • Recognition of the role grandparent carers and older carers play.
  • Improving awareness of the supports available to grandparent carers and older carers.
  • Community engagement which helps communities to become safer, more resilient and inclusive.
  • Promoting social harmony through a project which aims to be celebratory and joyful.
